Operation Purple Camp
Operation Purple Camp has been in Oregon since 2006. Tsuga Community Commission is proud to have been selected again in 2011 by the National Military Family Association to facilitate their community development agenda in Oregon since 2008. The Camp Staff Coalition has played a fundamental role in supporting Oregon military youth and their efforts to build a positive sense of community identity.
Youth from military families face special challenges in their schools and at home. Parents of youth experiencing the long-term deployment of a spouse face special challenges, often compromising the level of support for youth at home. Oregon is unique in that it primarily consists of Guard and Reserve families that find themselves suddenly more associated with other military families during deployments. However, Oregon does not have federal military bases offering social support or service support for those families. Youth of military families experiencing deployment often live in the same neighborhood, but are unaware of the other and their similar experience.
TCC's development and execution of the Operation Purple program offer Oregon military families a significant opportunity to take a step back from their daily stresses during deployment and benefit from our specialized staff and on-site social workers. They also enjoy a fantastic week of summer camp. Our customized version of Operation Purple caters to the unique needs of Oregon military families helping youth across the state take an active role in their own development of effective communication skills, while sharing in a camp experience that develops positive community identity.
